leave me at the altar

LEAVE ME AT THE ALTAR

tragedy is what people
come here to find
refuge from

in addition to moments
like this
moments of innocent
promise
flanked by the ignorance
and wisdom of those
who’ve come before us

cancer is as asleep
as our first unborn son

dementia is
unknowingly masked
as intellect

failure and success
are written into
itineraries of
perception

none of them
provided before
earned

you can never know
what you’re getting
into as you hold my
hands

staring softly
into my eyes
with the beliefs of
only that which has
been climaxed in
this moment

there will be days
the softness will disappear
and on those days i
will stand there as now
still loving you

there may even come a
day when our eyes can no
longer make out the others
and on those days i
will stand there as now
still loving you

but if the mere idea of pain
should lead you to stray
from me
then leave me here
at the altar and
depart now

for always i will stand
here

loving you
