nature’s quaint message

nature's quaint message

mom’s heart was trying to
tell us something
similar to what dad’s liver
said when it turned his
eyes into sunflowers

we were on our hands
and knees
bending to circumstance
and praying the soil beneath
fingernails and mind
would yield new growth

the kind that swells joy
instead of organs
