Jane Matthews

At 14 Jane began sunbathing out of sympathy to the ocean. Later she’d correct her Mom and explain that it was empathy and not sympathy that inspired her to regularly tan and burn one side of her body. Mom once took her to a psychologist who explained away the behavior as ‘normal teenage wilds’.

When Jane turned 18 she moved out of her parents home to live with a boyfriend that lived in a camper one block from the ocean she’d frequented during her most intense burning sessions. Apart from the circus season, they’d spend the remainder of their time bashing people’s heads in before tying their bodies to rocks, to seek satisfaction in watching them slowly sink beneath the surface without so much as a secondary struggle
