e merging

A blue teddy bear with one eye
A makeshift blanket and the
Highway —

Cigarette smoke fills the backseat
I watch as bottles of liquor glow in
Moonlight like lava lamps —

There is talk of sex, laughter and
I watch him put one hand beneath
Her skirt; the other on the wheel

I focus on signs at each overpass
Wondering how to count south from 5
Before sucking my thumb for comfort

A different man for each ride
Sometimes cigarettes; other times cigars
Always english; old, about 800

Almost a million
Before earning enough to
Sleep in the car without sickness
